Roberto di Candido Tenor Serenade

“Sinfonia Plus” Champagne Concert No. 28

July 12, Wednesday, 7pm (doors open 6:30pm)

Oji Hall (Ginza)

Born into a musical family in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Roberto Di Candido Toledo Silveira Nunes de Siquera played violin, trumpet, percussion and piano and sang as a youth. He then studied voice and opera at the Universidade de Sao Paulo.

At the age of 18 he left for Europe in an effort to further develop his innate musical talent. In defiance of the wishes of his family, he travelled to England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland in a constant pilgrimage to study with the most famous singing teachers in the field, including the great tenor Nicola Martinucci. In order to support his studies during this period, he earned money to sustain himself by teaching horseback-riding.

A spectacularly gifted dramatico-lyrico tenor, Di Candido has sung in many parts of Europe, amassing a performing repertoire of scores of major operatic roles. Arriving in Japan in 2008, he was immediately invited to become a regular member of the Fujiwara Opera in Tokyo.

Di Candido refers to himself as a lyric tenor. That hardly does justice though to the effortless power of an amazingly spectacular voice. The Tokyo Sinfonia audience was regaled by that incredible voice in 2016 when Di Candido appeared with us for the first time. Nor surprisingly, his fans are already calling for tickets for his return appearance next month.
His programme is planned to please aficionados of three genres of the musical stage: music drama, grand opera, and light opera. Each style is represented by showpiece tenor arias of the most famous composers.
Bachianas Brasileiros (Villa-Lobos)
Wisendoch Lieder (Wagner)
Celeste Aida (Verdi) • Vesti la Giubba (Leoncavallo) • Nessun Dorma (Puccini)
Serenade (Romberg) • I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General (Sullivan) • I am Falling in Love with Someone (Herbert)
Our audience is invited to a Champagne reception with our artists after the performance.
